A poll of sorts
In browsing through my web logs to see what people are hitting on my site, I came across several links to various strangers' personal blogs. When I followed those links, I discovered that these strangers were linking directly to photos I had taken on my blog. The images themselves were not hot linked for people to be able to click and get back to my site - they were just serving up the image directly from my site within their own blog.
No trackbacks or attributions were given to the photos and my permission was not asked to use them.
they're not super impressive photos. One of the photos was of the gold-plated sink I took with my camera phone in a store window during my Cannes trip, for example.
I'm not sure how I feel about this though. should I
1) Let it go - it's no big deal; everyone does it and I'm just being bitchy
2) Say something to them
3) Move the photo so they have a broken image on their site
4) replace the photo with an image of something obnoxious so that shows up on their site instead?
5) Simply regenerate the image with a copyright watermark (and get in the habit of doing that for all my photos from hereon out ;-))

Comments

well, I ended up posting a comment on this person's blog to the effect of "Glad you thought that this photo I took was interesting enough to link to it directly from your web site" and then regenerated the image with a watermark.
The comment and the newly watermarked image stayed on his site for about a day, and then I noticed he had deleted the comment, made a local copy of the photo and had cropped it, removing the watermark.
Whatever dude.

One would think they would have covered the removal of copyright information and the use of media without permission or attribution in the class. Perhaps that's why he got an A- and not an A.
Ah well. Gotta love the Internet? A photo of a gold sink taken with my camera phone is probably not really worth my time and effort.
I'll chalk it up as one more of my anonymous Internet legacies - you heard it here folks: I am the real creator of "the gold sink photo".
