Image linking and and image theft solutions

Posted by Heather on June 12, 2005 at 6:50 PM

Thanks to Tim and Dave for help in finding solutions to the image linking and theft problem :-)

1) Hotlink Protection - Lunarpages, the fantastic folks who host our web site, in their infinite wisdom have provided a "hotlink protection" feature that, when enabled, prevents other websites from directly linking to certain types of file types on your web site. Other sites will still be able to link to any file type that you don't specify (eg html files). So I've enabled this to prevent folks from linking to my image files and thus stealing my bandwidth, so to speak.

2) Right Click Disabling - the above solution doesn't prevent folks from right clicking and saving a local copy of the image however. So to counteract that, I found a great java script at dynamicdrive.com that disables right-clicks specifically on images (because sometimes people want to be able to right click on links, or use the right-click menu to view source, save shortcut and other things - to which I am not opposed).

Seems to work. I'll have to redo my photo albums slowly, but that'll be easy.
