Nothin' much...
going on today. Tim's working a Roller Derby today. Yup - the real thing, with women on real roller skates. He's promised to take some pictures (and so he did!). He's been gone all day and probably won't be back until around midnight or 1am. I drove out there this evening on a dinner run for him and his crew, and was quite bemused by the eclectic crowd of folks who were lining up to get in and watch the spectacle. Talked to Tim a bit later and he said the place is packed. For the friday night gang who will get this reference, he described it as "Circus Contraption on Roller Skates" so that gives you some idea. If not, then check out the Bay Area Derby Girls web site. These gals were not in the derby Tim's doing but their web site will give you the right vibe. Turn your sound on before you click on the "derby girls" link for the full effect :-)
No - the derby Tim's at is featuring the Rat City Roller Girls - Seattle's own all-female roller derby league . Their web site doesn't have the cool music that the Bay Area Derby Girls have though ;-)
I guess the term 'Roller Skates' is now dated. I hear the young 'uns are calling them 'four-wheelers' now. They're considered very 'retro chic' I guess in some parts. You know, I couldn't even find any clip art of the real roller skates. Just blades.
Sigh. That makes me feel old. I have a great pair of roller blades now but I remember my roller skates. When we lived in Toronto (that would make me oh... 9 or 10 I think) I used to get together with my friends in the summer and we'd put on these little roller skating shows in the parking lot of our townhouse block. We'd set up lawn chairs and cordon off a "stage" area, and invite our parents to come and watch. The "show" usually consisted of us skating round in circles showing off our latest tricks which we had practiced diligently every night after watching "Happy Days". Stuff like "shoot the duck", two foot spins, skating backwards and then switching to frontwards on the fly and vice versa. Oh we were SO cool. Our townhouse block had a 3-foot wooden barrier that circled the parking lot and units - made out of wood that resembles old railroad ties and seemingly wide enough to roller skate on (if you were 9 years old). I can remember attempting such a feat only to get tripped up by a knot in the wood and falling onto the cement pathway 3 feet below, scraping both of my knees up something horrible, blood pouring endlessly down the front of both legs as I sobbed and hobbled my way to our end unit. Yeah - those were good times.
Anyway - I can't wait to see Tim's pictures from tonight. When I talked with him earlier he said they had already had two fights! Hehe. Tim says he might be doing the sound for another one next month. If so, I'm hoping he can get me in to watch - it oughtta be great fun :-)
I went swimming again this afternoon - it just feels so good! Stayed in the pool for about 30 minutes. Did 10 laps. Baby Girl enjoyed it. I actually used the olympic-sized lap pool this time, because there were a bunch of other slow people already in it so I didn't feel too bad for taking up a lane ;-). Besides, the "all purpose" pool was packed with kids and parents. That'll be me and Baby Girl some day! However when the purpose is to get some focused exercise, swimming around kid obstacles can be quite challenging. It's just as well though that I opted for the lap pool, because about half way through my laps the lifeguard at the all-purpose pool ordered everyone out and shut it down. Once it was vacated, they got out their long poles with nets and started fishing around and scooping stuff out. No - I didn't look. I figured best not to know what it was :-)
Came home after swimming and took a nap, did some dishes, and then went on Tim's dinner run. When I got home from that I did my usual 2.5 mile walk, and then plopped myself in front of the TV with a big glass of water and a bowl of baby carrots and celery. Oh.. um, I *might* have indulged myself in a few potato chips as well. But hell - I deserved it. I walked AND swam. CBC had an interesting show on while I munched - it was filler after the CFL football game that had just finished airing so I can't find it on the schedule, but it was about Canadian linguistics - Canadian words and speech patterns and the evolution of both, and comparisons to American. It was really interesting and kinda humourous. I'm bummed I don't know what it was called. I hope they air it again. Family - if you're reading this and know the show I'm referring to, let me know what it was called!
We're heading out to the property tomorrow. Should see lots of changes - gravel pathways, smoothed out top soil ready for hydroseeding, painted trim and ceilings, and maybe even wall colour! Woohoo! Can't wait to see it :-)
