A glimpse in the mirror

These days watching Bobbin play is like watching a cute and tiny yet exaggerated image of myself.

Yesterday Bobbin was playing in her crib with her kitty and her diapers, doing the usual diaper changing routine. Then she glanced up at her music box and paused. She set kitty down, and moved her diapers out of the way in preparation for what I realized was about to be an adorable little reinactment of our morning and bedtime routine. It went like this.

"Good Mahning kitty" Bobbin said softly, bending down over kitty. "Kitty? Good mahning honey" she said again, gently stroking kitty's back. Then she picked kitty up and gave her a kiss and hug and said "Diaper change? Bottle?" and set about putting a diaper on kitty (I had to help with the last little bit). ""Good girl, kitty" she said when she was done. Then she busied herself in her crib, tidying up (she asked for her broom which I gave her, and she set about sweeping her crib) and set kitty in the corner to "play".

At one point Kitty must have gotten into something she shouldn't have, because Bobbin turned around, set the broom down, and said "Kitty, no. No kitty. Not nice", picked Kitty up, and moved her to another corner of the crib, gave her a kiss and another firm "no", and then returned to her tidying. As she tidied she hummed and sang her "cleanup" song.

Then it was bedtime. "Kitty, put nite-nite?" she asked. She picked kitty up gently and nestled kitty into her arms, kitty's head resting on Bobbin's shoulder. Bobbin cocked her head to one side so her face was touching Kitty's, and then she reached out and turned on her music box and started swaying gently side to side, patting kitty on the back, and whispering in kitty's ear. When the song was done, Bobbin started singing "doo doo doo doo" softly to kitty as she continued to rock from side to side. Then she asked "Kitty, sleep?" and put kitty gently down in her bed, covered her with her blanket, and patted her gently on the back.

It was so sweet. I just sat in the rocking chair watching and beaming with pride, little tiny tears of happiness forming in the corners of my eyes.

Bobbin's also taken to finding and kissing Mommy's owies. I am and always have been a nail biter. My nails and fingers are in horrible shape. On occasion I'll get hang nails and I'll pick at those as well, so I have a couple of small scabs on a couple of fingers. When we're sitting together, Bobbin will examine my hands, finger by finger, ever so gently and when she finds one of these little scars or scabs she'll hold my finger gingerly in her hands, look up at my eyes and say "Mommy owie?" with her brow furrowed in concern, and then she'll bring my finger up to her mouth and give it a little tiny kiss to make it all better.

My sweet sweet little Bobbin. I love you so much! And I'm so very proud of you!

A loving mommy makes for a loving child. How sweet. What a glaring reminder that how we treat our children can come back to haunt us or bring us great pride. They're such little sponges. It's fun seeing and hearing about what Bobbin is up to, I'm looking forward to Lucas at all those stages as well.

I got a little tearing reading this myself.

You guys are fab parents! Bobbin is such a little love.
