I love you lots and a lot

Bobbin's birthday is coming up. Last week we sat down and made party invitations for her to give to all her friends. I did the printing, she did the colouring and "signing" of each one, and then put them in the envelopes, licked them and stickered them, and handed them out at school.

One of the invitation recipients was her BFF, Little Z, a boy she's been in daycare with since she was 3 months old. They're a month apart in age, and practically inseparable - constantly hugging, holding hands, chasing each other, playing together, and on occasion even giving each other shy kisses goodbye.

Z is unfortunately going to be visiting his grandparents the weekend that Bobbin is having her party, so he politely declined but brought her a birthday gift today to school, which he gave her as we were all leaving for the day. Bobbin was beaming, and clearly touched - I really mean visibly touched that he would give her a gift. She was just beside herself, silent but smiling ever so slightly, unsure of where to look, hugging him several times in thanks and holding his hand, and patting his head as she said goodbye. There was beautiful kindness in her eyes as she looked at him. It was heartachingly sweet.

So we left the school and Little Z and his mom proceeded to their car, and Bobbin and I stood on the sidewalk waiting for the parking lot to clear so we could get to our car. As Z was stepping into the parking lot, Bobbin called out "Z, be careful ok? Be careful in the parking lot so a car does not run over you because I don't want you to get hurt and I love you lots and a lot, ok?" His response was to break away from his mother's grip and run back up to the sidewalk to give her a hug.

Oh man... if this is what it's like at 3, I'm a little unsure of what to expect 13 years from now. But luckily that's still... 13 years away. At least. I hope.
